So what is the Common Table exactly? We are glad you asked!
The Common Table on Spring began in early 2024 with a simple conviction: that neighbors sharing meals can transform a community. What started as Chris and Jessica Fowler’s “Stone Soup” suppers at Grace Episcopal Church quickly blossomed into a broader movement. With the support of Holly Hughson, Grace, community donors, and volunteers, the Common Table became a weekly and then bi-weekly tradition — one that has re-knit the social fabric of St. Helena.
In its first full year (fall 2024 through spring 2025), the Common Table hosted dozens of meals attended by anywhere from 50 to more than 100 people. Local chefs volunteered their time, service clubs and businesses underwrote costs, and faithful volunteers set tables, washed dishes, and welcomed guests. More than $95,000 was raised, enabling over 2,000 meals to be shared. Yet the true impact cannot be measured in dollars or plates served. Families, retirees, newcomers, and long-time residents all discovered that the food is only the beginning — the real gift lies in conversation, friendship, and belonging.
While it was born out of the vision and generosity of a few individuals, the program’s ongoing success rests on strong partnerships. Rotary, Soroptimists, Odd Fellows, Pacific Union College, the SDA Church, Central Valley Hardware, Silverado Orchards, local caterers, and restaurants all joined in.
The Common Table is more than a meal. It is a living expression of hospitality, generosity, and joy — a space where everyone has a place at the table. AND YOU ARE INVITED!
